Surfing in New Caledonia is all about riding the heart of the wave secluded places on world-class breaks. Surfing has been practiced for decades. Off Bourail, a town on the West Coast known for its surfing beach of Roche Percée, hit by waves created by its wide channel and coastal reef.
However, it is above the edge of passes du grand récif that the challenging surfing takes place. "Surf camps" provide food, lodging and transfers to the "hot spots" on the West Coast and in particular to Dumbéa pass, located about 17 km south-west of Noumea. Various surf competitions are also now held, including the Surf Championship of New Caledonia.
New Caledonia is well known on the world windsurfing circuit and many international windsurfing champions were born here - Robert Teriitehau, Michel Quintin-. All kinds of surfers share the passion, from competitors to recreational windsurfers, from 7 to 77 years. As soon as the trade winds start blowing, the parade of sailboards bring the waters of Anse Vata and Cote Blanche to life. New Caledonia, hosts annual international competitions such as « Trophée des Alizés » (“theTrophy of the Trade Winds"), bringing together the cream of the international profession, the press, and passionate spectators.

This spectacular sport has been practiced here for about ten years. Since 2001, Teri Kite Surf Pro, the last leg of the world tour, crowns the world champions in the discipline after a week of speed crossing, tricks and freestyle.
Pulled along by a sail, the kite surfer surfs on a mini-surfboard and can jump several meters. This new discipline has become hugely popular; it is particularly good for exploring the islets of the lagoon. Tenia Islet, for example, at 1 hour 30 minutes from Noumea and then a drive of 30 minutes by water taxi, is accessible, and is a haven for kite surfers.
